The Luria Library, like most organizations, has developed a mission statement. “The Library seeks to facilitate and improve learning by providing collections and services to meet the educational, cultural and professional needs of students and faculty.” -- the mission statement of Luria Library. Also, like most organizations, we forget our mission statement because it is long. This summer I attended BBWorld, a users conference for Blackboard and WebCT users. The keynote speaker, Guy Kawasaki, encouraged organizations to develop a mantra – a word or short phrase – that conveys the meaning of the organization. Some examples he provided include:
Wendy’s “Healthy fast food”
Nike “Authentic athletic performance”
FedEx “Peace of Mind”
eBay “Democratize commerce”
What mantra could we develop for the Luria Library? What does the library mean to you? When you walk away from the library as satisfied customer, what is it that gave you satisfaction? Some ideas we’ve generated include:
- Explore, learn, grow
- Enrich your life and mind
- A source you can trust
- Information Gateway to Your Future
- Knowledge you need
- Portal to your future
- Your best information resource
- Your total information resource
- Information you can count on
- Where ideas come together
- For reliable guides to information
- Strive, Thrive, Excel
- Questions, Imagination, Excellence
- Study, Research, Learn, Evolve
- Books, Questions, Answers
Do you like any of these? What are your ideas? Use the comment link to tell us.

The level of noise IN THE LIBRRARY is unbelievable....and now a espresso machine? beyond stupidity...the librarians, instead of setting an example of speaking in hushed tones and asking others to do the same, carry on conversations at full volume.
Don't tell me I have to go downstairs for quiet...the level of noise even when sitting in the far corner of the upstairs is LOUD. As a librarian, if you don't get it, you should be in another line of work, seriously.
A library is a place to STUDY, not talk on cell phones and chat with your friends. We pay taxes and tuition for this school, AND YOU ARE HERE TO SERVE US AND GIVE THE BEST SITUATION POSSIBLE.
Everyone, (especially the coffee cart staff) NEED TO KEEP IT DOWN!! people act like they're in their own living room. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WE CAN FIND THE PEACE AND QUIET NECESSARY FOR STUDY, REFLECTION AND CONCENTRATION, AND WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GO DOWNSTAIRS OR IN A PRIVATE ROOM FOR THAT.

"Information on Demand"
"Learn. Know. Thrive."

Luke - Thank you for expressing your concerns. We strive to meet the needs of all students who use the library, even when they seem to contradict each other. I agree that the noise level can be high and I have already spoken with the coffee cart staff about speaking loudly. We do not allow cell phone conversations to occur in the library, so please remind us if you see someone on the phone and we'd be happy to address the issue.
Half of the library has been allocated as a 'quiet zone' and, though not perfect, it is our best solution to those who need quiet study space. Again, if there is noise on the lower level that needs to be addressed, please let one of the staff members know immediately (there is a phone downstairs that rings directly to reference).
We don't mind reminders and we always welcome feedback.
Kind regards.
Kenley

I like the second one on the list but it is still too long. The best mantra will be quick and smooth.
So this is my suggestion: Enrich the Mind
Whadyathink?

mantras? how about:
Discoveries made here daily.
Connect to your world.
Discover. Learn. Advance.
Seek. Understand. Wonder.
Engage your world.
Find the world's ideas here.
World's ideas found here.
(maybe you could turn this into a contest for students studying business/marketing...)
