War in art and Literature

books.jpg

The theme of war has been pervasive in human creative endeavors, whether the emphasis is on valor, glory, horror, loss, military success or defeat. This theme is being explored through literature for Professor Celeste Barber's English 111 course and works her students will study, as well as books of painting, photography, history, journalism, fiction and poetry, are on display in the library now.

9/11

There are many perspectives on how to recognize the sixth anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, 2001. This year on the 11th, prayer vigils, runs, film screening, marches, concerts, discussion groups will take place to give people a chance to stop and consider the impact of 9/11. Decide for yourself, with these resources:

Check out a book on the subject from the Luria Library:

The Library of Congress' September 11, 2001, Documentary Project "captures the heartfelt reactions, eyewitness accounts, and diverse opinions of Americans and others in the months that followed the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93. Patriotism and unity mixed with sadness, anger, and insecurity are common themes expressed in this online presentation of audio and video interviews, 45 graphic items, and 21 written narratives."

9/11 Flag

Peaceful Tomorrows was founded by family members of those killed on September 11 and it advocates non-violent options in regard to war and terrorism.

Candidates in the 2008 Presidential campaign refer to 9/11

Not surprisingly, the New York Times has continued its coverage of the 9/11 attacks and has kept an archive

A musical memorial is being built at the website Music from Ground Zero

Finding Journals and Magazines

Are you looking for a specific magazine or journal and want to know if the Luria Library owns a copy? Do you want to see what journals or magazines are available on a specific subject? Try our new A-Z List of Journal and Periodical Holdings. Over the summer we purchased this new product to help us find the journals, magazines, and newspapers in our collection (both print and electronic). Because we have 12,180 titles available in 11 different databases, this tool is important for cross searching the databases for titles. The new product is available on our Databases page. You may also encounter a button called Article Linker from within one of our databases that will search the A-Z List when full text is not available in that database, but may be available in another or in the library. The library staff may be customizing the List over the coming months, but it is available today for you to search. If you have suggestions or questions, please let us know.
