War in art and Literature

The theme of war has been pervasive in human creative endeavors, whether the emphasis is on valor, glory, horror, loss, military success or defeat. This theme is being explored through literature for Professor Celeste Barber's English 111 course and works her students will study, as well as books of painting, photography, history, journalism, fiction and poetry, are on display in the library now.

Professor Barber's course is part of the Great Books Program. Established in 1947, the Great Books Program is a program of study of the classic works of western civilization, based on the Socratic method of group discussion. Colleges, high schools, reading groups and individuals read and reflect on what are considered to be some of the greatest works written

SBCC is one of five colleges selected to develop a Great Books Curriculum, specifically for community college students. There are currently thirty-five classes in four disciplines offering this curriculum. Learn more about our program by picking up a flyer in the library.
