2011-2012 Library Resident Position
The Luria Resident is generously funded by The Luria Foundation. This is an opportunity for a recent library school graduate to explore community college librarianship by working in all areas of an award-winning community college library. The position is part-time and will be completed between September 1-December 9 (Fall 2011) and January 30-May 11 (Spring 2012).
Santa Barbara City College is a comprehensive community college serving the south coast of Santa Barbara County. Established in 1909, SBCC is renowned as one of the leading two-year community college in California – and the nation. The college has a wide range of associate degree and certificate programs, as well as transfer programs that provide the first two years of study toward the baccalaureate degree. Students are attracted to SBCC by virtue of its outstanding faculty, small classes, state-of-the-art facilities and numerous student services.
About the Library
The Eli Luria Library, named after our benefactor Eli Luria, was built in 1989. The Luria Library offers a dynamic, innovative, and exciting place for students to learn. The Luria Library responds to the needs and learning styles of today’s student, helping them achieve their learning outcomes, enrich their lives, establish careers, and see the value of libraries in relationship to their learning. A tag line was created in 2007, with faculty and student input, to help focus this new vision: Explore. Learn. Grow.
Last year, we were commended by the accrediting agency for our “extensive use of innovative communication technology (wikis, blogs, web pages, instant messaging) by library faculty to reach out and provide services to students; and enhancing student engagement through partnerships with faculty and the development of directed learning activities which extend classroom instruction into the tutorial environment.” (2010)
In January 2011, we won the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.
- Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Library Science, Library and Information Science that was awarded in the last two years.
- A career interest in community college librarianship.
- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.; adaptable to a rapidly changing environment, and ability to collaborate with various departmental service units.
- Energetic, innovative, and flexible.
Possible Tasks and Areas of Work
The Library Resident will rotate through different operations of the library. The list below is an example of the types of process and tasks the Library Resident might expect to participate in during a semester. The Library Resident is also encouraged to make suggestions and bring their own innovative ideas.
- Catalog archive collection
- Enhance bibliographic records in integrated library system
- Collection Development
- Work with acquisition plan and review sources to recommend purchases
- Update the paperback collection using books from the Friends sale or new purchases
- Participate in SBCC orientation functions to promote library program
- Update library blog and “what’s hot” articles on library website
- Explore and implement eBook promotion
- Explore and implement virtual reference promotion
- Explore and implement database promotion
- Create book displays
- Create user survey or usability studies
- Investigate “green library” practices opportunities for the Luria Library
Donations and Friends of the Library Book Sale
- Review donations and identify possible additions to library collection
- Stock and keep book sale shelves appealing
- Support the online book sale using Alibris
- Attempt to sell books online from donation shelves
- Look for appropriate grant application sources
- Collaborate with librarians for library instruction in discipline specific classes
- Support and provide reference services
Schedule and Salary
The position will begin in September 2011. The Library Resident will work 15-20 hours per week during the academic semesters. This is a part-time position and will end in May 2012. Specific schedule will be mutually agreed upon with the Library Director. The position is formally an adjunct librarian and will be paid on that salary schedule (approximately $40/hr).
