Reports

  • Library Director

Kenley reported as follows: He is Senate representative for Educational Support and liaison to couple committees for Senate—Academic Policies, Planning & Resources and Facilities Safety Disaster Committee. Enrollment is up 6% (20,000+ students) over last Fall; 125 sections cut. No cuts to Library budget this year, except hourly students, but federal work study funds increased.

The paper comments box has been replaced by Feedback button on every page of Library website. Library cell: 699-Luria. Live chat box imbedded in five classes through Moodle. There are four Library 101 classes this semester.

Complaint was received regarding children’s area stating small table and chairs should be removed. Staff discussed need to be attentive to children and to remind parents to provide supervision.


  • Dean

Alice said she noticed the impacted demand for services during her visits to Library and thanked the staff for the great work. She mentioned the Dean’s role is to focus on restoring budgets. Next resource templates occur October 15th. Jack Friedlander will offer new option to ask for specific restoration when budget is flush. Federal money was received for backfill and general district money ($566,000 end of year funds) went to backfill. Categorical funding to be cut 64% in 2010-11.

  • Outreach Activities

Elizabeth reported as follows: 1) SBCC joins Santa Barbara Reads for The BIG READ—Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Two classes will participate in student symposium in Library; 2) Art Gallery intern will have one show in Library; 3) Black Student Union will hold meetings and bake sale in Library; 4) Veterans Awareness Day activity in Library; 5) CalSoap 9th and 10th graders will come for Library tour and student panel; 6) Transitions – Career Center will provide better connection with Library; 7) Knitted squares for five blankets sent to South Africa; 8) Fall in-service presentation by Andreea Serban showed a picture of Edible Book Festival winner: Board Policies Cake.

  • Student Learning Outcomes (update and collect)

Kenley said the librarians will meet to collect and revise questions.

New Business

  • Second Life

Kenley stated SBCC has island in Second Life. He showed tour of island and asked for ideas on how to use big empty space in island Library.

  • Faculty Evaluation - collection method

Kenley said three librarians are being evaluated this semester. Library website shows picture of each librarian, evaluation form, and information on drawing for $25.00 gift certificate.
