Types of Interaction

Library Instruction - Basic (ESL 1-3; ENG 60,65) - LI-Basic Measurements

Successful student will be able to:

1. Identify differences between books, periodicals, web sites.

2. Differentiate between fiction and non-fiction.

3. Use call numbers to find books.

4. Differentiate between reference and circulating books.

5. Check out a book.

6. Know where and how to find a librarian.

Library Instruction - Intermediate (ESL 4-5; ENG 70-100; other disciplines) - LI-Intermediate Measurements

Successful student will be able to:

1. Identify differences between books, periodicals, web sites.

2. Differentiate between fiction and non-fiction.

3. Know which tools to use to locate books and periodicals, online and in print.

4. Extract relevant information from found resources by reading and using the organizational tools of the resources (such as, table of contents, indices) to meet information need.

5. Know how to develop keyword(s) and/or other search strategies.

6. Know where and how to find a librarian.

Library Instruction - Advanced (ENG 103; ENG 110 and above; other disciplines) - LI-Advanced Measurements

Successful student will be able to:

1. Know how to develop keyword(s) and/or other search strategies.

2. Know which tools to use to locate books and periodicals, online and in print.

3. Identify differences between scholarly and popular publications.

4. Identify differences between primary and secondary sources.

5. Evaluate the quality of material for credibility, reliability, relevance, and authorship.

6. Extract relevant information from found resources by reading and using the organizational tools of the resources (such as, table of contents, indices) to meet information need.

7. Know where and how to find a librarian.

Reference (longer than 2-minutes) - Reference Measurements

Successful student will be able to:

1. Articulate the information need, required time frame, and locate themselves in the information seeking process.

2. Perform a database or library catalog search.

3. Demonstrate advanced search strategies (such as, limit search to peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, keyword development, full text only).

Brief Encounters (less than 2-minutes) - Brief Measurements

1. Student can navigate the library to find people, equipment and/or information resources needed.

2. Use the library catalog to find books.

3. Use the library web page to find databases.

4. Know where and how to find a librarian.
