SBCC Reads : ''ENRIQUE’S JOURNEY: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with his Mother''

In collaboration with UCSB READS 2010, Santa Barbara City College's Luria Library will be hosting a number of events to explore the issues raised as we read this book together.

The UCSB Library and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, with generous support from many UCSB sponsors, are proud to present the UCSB Reads common reading experience during winter quarter 2010. Community partners include the Santa Barbara Public Library System, the Santa Barbara City College Luria Library, the Westmont College Library, the Antioch University Library, and local high schools.

Purpose:

series of conversations, lectures, readings, displays, and other activities that explore interdisciplinary issues sparked by the selected read. Copies of the book are distributed free to interested students, and faculty members are encouraged to incorporate the book into their class curricula.

• Generate informed discussion of key issues by promoting the reading and discussion of books on the broad theme of borders and their significance to the human experience.

• Encourage the exchange of ideas among members of our campus and U.C. Santa Barbara, Westmont College, and Antioch University, as well as Santa Barbara community members.

• Create further campus appreciation of the library and the role it plays in education and research.

• Highlight academic strengths across the disciplines that can provide us with a broader understanding of the impacts of cultural, political and geographical borders.
• Create a sense of fun and camaraderie on campus while addressing an important issue.

The book chosen for discussion, Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with his Mother by Sonia Nazario, allows us a glimpse of life beyond the political and cultural border between the United States and its southern neighbors.
